His Holiness the Dalai Lama is one of the pivotal figures of our time. He is, more than anyone else that can be presently named, a world citizen and world teacher.

His work in ethics, human rights,world peace, psychology and education, Buddhist teaching and East West relations, is second to none in our generation.

In addition to a Nobel Peace Prize and the US Congressional Gold Medal, HH the Dalai Lama has received scores of honorary Doctorates ( in Laws, Philosophy, Human Letters, Divinity, Buddhist Philosophy, and so forth ) from major teaching centers worldwide. These include Columba, Brandeis, Universite de Paris, Benaras Hindu University, Hebrew University Jerusalem, U California San Francisco, and Rissho University Tokyo. He is an honorary citizen of Canada, of Roma Italia and so forth.

He speaks worldwide and has published more than seventy two books.

He is one of the most respected and revered persons on the the planet. On one visit to New York City some years back, forty thousand people turned out to see the Dalai Lama in the park.

When the Dalai Lama gives the Highest Yoga Tantra initiation ( abhisekha ) of Kalacakra, the attendees sometimes number 100,000 or even 200,000. HH the Dalai Lama has given this initiation thirty times in different parts of the world. In addition to being a master of the Great Seal ( Mahamudra ) lineage of Buddhist tantra, he also gives initiations of the Great Perfection ( Mahasandhi, Atiyoga ), for example in London, in San Francisco, and Paris.

You can see him this year at public talks in several areas, such as Hawaii, California, Illinois, Europe, and India. A current schedule is provided below.

I have seen HH the Dalai Lama give extremely worthwhile empowerments in Los Angeles and San Francisco, and represented him to the State Legislature of Hawaii in 1993, where he was invited to give a talk, and did. I have listened carefully to him conferencing with Hawaiian elders in public and was struck by the care and attention he gave in listening to others, and in asking questions.

HH the Dalai Lama has written extremely important books on psychology and ethics, and I recommend these to the general public for self-help purposes, and also recommend some of his books to those committed to public service, especially in the area of multiculturalism, international human rights work, and the international Green Party movement.

Because of the profound confluence of modern events, global economics, environmental issues and human cultures, the importance of broader and deeper human co-operation becomes ever greater.

To obtain a broader and clearer understanding and principles for working with these issues, studying the secular works of the Dalai Lama is of great value.

Similarly, His Holiness is one of the few people who can and does speak for the diverse Buddhist populations and traditions worldwide. He has taught senior Japanese tantric Buddhist gurus of the Shingon lineage in their country, for instance. His Holiness is a paragon of the Buddhist renunciate order ( bhiksu-sangha ), of Buddhist scholarship, and of the Mahayana Great Way lineages, all of which are profoundly universal.

This teacher is one of our very very best, be you a psychologist or academic, a diplomat, a tantric yogi, or a Buddhist practitioner. He has completely revolutionized Buddhist teaching, parts of popular modern culture, the understanding of international diplomacy and so forth in our lifetime.

This is someone who actually embodies many of the key principles of the United Nations treaties on human rights, and also the key Buddhist Mahayana principles and teachings. It is important to note that the Mahayana Buddhist principles and the principles of the UN human rights work are essentially identical. There are universal principles that take us all forward, individually and together. In Buddhist Sanskrit these terms are, for instance pratitya-samutpada and karma. Now you know.

The final point I wish to put forward to all is this: the Dalai Lama believes in all of us as people who *already* have sensitive human hearts that can be educated and developed, and he shows all of us a very real and practical way forward, a way based on self-understanding, listening and mutual respect, and patient co-operation.

You could do worse, and please remember that due to impermanence, this master teacher will not live forever. It is not clear how anyone anywhere can replace him.

I see no real alternative to respect and co-operation for the common good, because we are one world. For this broader and deeper reason, and not specifically because he is a Buddhist guru, I support this teacher. He was not allowed by their government to attend a recent peace conference in South Africa, but he is available to you, and he is here for All Our Relations. May he live long and may his brilliant consciousness reach many many more.

"EACH RELIGION HAS certain unique ideas or techniques, and learning about them can only enrich one’s own faith."

Tenzin Gyatso was born in a rural village in Tibet. Following the practices of Tibetan Buddhism he was recognized as the 14th reincarnation of the Dalai Lama. Dalai Lamas are believed to be the manifestation of Avalokiteshvara (also known as Chenrezig), the Bodhisattva or “enlightened being” of compassion and the patron saint of Tibet.

As the Dalai Lama, Tenzin Gyatso began his monastic education at the age of 6. He received his doctorate in Buddhist philosophy at 23, but prior to completing his education, politics intervened to shape his life in a dramatic fashion.

In October, 1950, China invaded Tibet, and the next month the Dalai Lama assumed full political power in the Tibetan government where the Dalai Lama has traditionally been the absolute ruler.

He initially sought to work within the Chinese Communist system. Then in 1959 there was a failed uprising by Tibetans that prompted the Dalai Lama to flee to India and set up a government in exile. Tens of thousands of Tibetans followed him into exile, leaving Tibet for India and other parts of the world.

In exile the Dalai Lama began a thorough overhaul of the Tibetan political system. He abandoned the traditional heavy-handed feudalistic system and established democratic reforms in both the government-in-exile and in the plans for a constitution for a free Tibet. He sought nonviolent means for liberating Tibet, offering a peace proposal including negotiations with China. Those efforts were recognized with the awarding of the Nobel Peace Prize in 1989.

In 2008 in the lead-up to the Beijing Olympics, another uprising and violent repression in Tibet focused world attention on the situation in that mountainous region. Shortly after the crisis initial contacts were made between the Dalai Lama and the Chinese government to open new negotiations to resolve the status of Tibet, though once again Tibetan hopes and dreams were frustrated when the talks failed to achieve any political change.

His political efforts might seem enough to consume a lifetime, but the Dalai Lama has also emerged as a leader in global interfaith efforts. In articulating his three major commitments, his first is the promotion of human values such as compassion, forgiveness, tolerance, contentment and self-discipline. His second is to harmony and understanding among the world’s religious traditions. The third commitment is to the people of Tibet as their Dalai Lama.

In pursuit of religious harmony he has met repeatedly with other global religious figures such as the Catholic Popes Paul VI and John Paul II and the Chief Rabbi of Israel as well as senior Muslim, Hindu, Sikh and Eastern Orthodox leaders. He sees the exchange of ideas and feelings between leaders of different religions as a way to “open the door to a progressive pacification between people.”

The Dalai Lama is more than the formal head of a major religious group appearing in global religious congresses. He has gotten directly involved in the organizing and planning of such events. This direct involvement in interreligious affairs and events has led to many deep interpersonal relationships with people of other faiths. Those close to him have testified about his impact in their lives. Working with other contemplatives of different religions in the Monastic Interreligious Dialogue, the Dalai Lama helped produce the Universal Declaration on Nonviolence. At the World Congress of Faith he said, “Each religion has certain unique ideas or techniques, and learning about them can only enrich one’s own faith.”

Through his relationships with so many religious leaders the Dalai Lama may have enriched his own faith, but countless people of other religions bear witness about how he has enriched their faith, as well.

Self-discipline, although difficult, and not always easy while combating negative emotions, should be a defensive measure. Once we develop this by familiarizing ourselves with it, along with mindfulness and conscientiousness, eventually that pattern and way of life will become a part of our own life.

In the present circumstances, no one can afford to assume that someone else will solve their problems. Every individual has a responsibility to help guide our global family in the right direction. Good wishes are not sufficient; we must become actively engaged.

It is very important to generate a good attitude, a good heart, as much as possible. From this, happiness in both the short term and the long term for both yourself and others will come.
The roots of all goodness lie in the soil of appreciation for goodness.
Love and compassion are necessities, not luxuries. Without them humanity cannot survive.

Old friends pass away, new friends appear. It is just like the days. An old day passes, a new day arrives. The important thing is to make it meaningful: a meaningful friend - or a meaningful day.
When we are young and again when we are old, we depend heavily on the affection of others. Between these stages we usually feel that we can do everything without help from others and that other people's affection is simply not important. But at this stage I think it is very important to keep deep human affection.

Our prime purpose in this life is to help others. And if you can't help them, at least don't hurt them.
Sometimes one creates a dynamic impression by saying something, and sometimes one creates as significant an impression by remaining silent.

Where ignorance is our master, there is no possibility of real peace.
Human potential is the same for all. Your feeling, "I am of no value", is wrong. Absolutely wrong. You are deceiving yourself. We all have the power of thought - so what are you lacking? If you have willpower, then you can change anything. It is usually said that you are your own master.
With realization of one's own potential and self-confidence in one's ability, one can build a better world.

The ultimate authority must always rest with the individual's own reason and critical analysis.
Open your arms to change, but don't let go of your values.

We can live without religion and meditation, but we cannot survive without human affection.
There is no need for temples, no need for complicated philosophies. My brain and my heart are my temples; my philosophy is kindness.

Hhhmmmmmm. Looking for a nice San Diego gay hippie type. Hippie is my state of mind not my hair style. Where do these characters hang out in SD? Certainly not the gay bars. I even posted a craigslist ad looking for gay hippies. You know how many replies? Good guess. Maybe I should have said "really liberal". Everyone thinks hippies have long hair and no job. Any DMB, string cheese or Dead fans that are gay? Haven't met any. That's just sad. How about a gay guy whose favorite band isn't Madonna. That would be cool. If anyone knows of a bar with a good mixed crowd, where this person may be. Let me know. Cuz I need him.

Rideshare? (The burn approaches!)

It may be a little early, it may not be, but I'm looking for someone to rideshare to BRC this year. I would prefer to drive with someone else as my small 4 door car has no a/c, but if that's the only option then we will make it happen! I have packed this car like a tetris expert many times.

Ideally, if someone has trailer space, I would like to be able to bring my geodesic dome dome, which consists of 25 pieces of 10 foot pvc. They lay nice and flat so we could stack the rest of your stuff over it. Other than that, I'm traveling light, a tent, water, and 2-4 plastic bins, depending on space (the costumes can always come next year)

Me: 23 year old college chick, returning burner after my first time last year. I listen to everything from electronic to country, so I wont be picky regarding your music choices. I smoke cigarettes, but not in the car, and I'm 420 friendly even though I dont smoke personally. I can leave anytime after 7:30pm on Friday August 26, but I need to be back for school on Tuesday September 6. I'm a marathon road tripper, love driving, and have a sparkling driving record. I would like to meet you first before we leave of course, looking forward to hearing from you.

Escondido shelter is a great place to volunteer...go thru' the orientation...then you can walk the dogs up in the hills, get a GREAT workout...
you can read to them, give them love treatments, massage them, play with the kitties, clean their cages - just help - it feels good and they need it. With the economy so crap - it's time to give back....this is an especially great way to get some doggie time if you cannot have a pet yourself for whatever reason(s).

Well we are at it again, organizing what will be the biggest and best event that we have attempted so far. Our hallmark is bringing art and entertainment from the SD burning man community to a huge wherehouse space and then filling that creative beautiful space with the most loving and awesome people San Diego has to offer. I can not think of a better place to bring in the new year then with this community that has supported us for our last three hugely successful findraising events. I would also like to see any other people who are interested in contributing their art, music, or just great energy to make our new years eve the best party in town. We have some great talent lined up already for our show. But we are looking for more Dj's to spin the night away, and any kind of art that our community has to offer. Boxer Dog available

He is about 5 years old...male...sweet and wiggly. This is an abuse case... if he goes to our shelter he will be euthanized.
As when they tried to catch pole him, he tried to bite them (so would I...) He just needs to be in a loving home. They have
kept him outside, he was very very thin, on a 40lb tow truck chain (off now) and his ears are being eaten terribly by flies which
I am trying to treat.... I walk him and he is fairly good on a leash...he'd be a great running partner for someone... the owner
has offered to give him away to a good home...this has taken me 6 months to convince her.... Let me know if you are interested.
He is fawn colored with a black mask and white chest....beautiful atheletic boy.

Contact Juggling- Greg
One of the most beautiful types of juggling... minimalism

in manipulation. Learn the basics of rolling and balancing

a ball with the world's first contact juggling teacher.

Beginning Double Staves:

Learn double staff from the ground up in this class designed for the beginner. After a thorough examination of the many myriad ways to manipulate a staff we begin combining techniques to seamlessly integrate a second staff.

Beginning Partner Poi:
Learn to spin with a friend. Partner poi is all about taking simple poi tricks and sharing

them with someone else. Learn 5 awesome moves in this class. Bring a partner or we'll provide you with one.

Beginning Contact Staff:
An introduction to contact staff manipulation with an emphasis on further learning. This class will take you through the basics of wrapping, rolling and spiraling with a staff. Hand, elbow, shoulder and neck wraps; halos and backside spirals

Intermediate Contact Staff:

We will explore taking fundamental contact moves and begin stringing them together into more complex move sequences including: conveyer belts, SNES, and Steves. We will also add a few more difficult individual moves to our contact vocabulary including: angel rolls and The Jesus.

Intermediate Poi Technique:

In this class we will explore several fields of moves that provide the foundation for many advanced poi techniques. We will cover isolation, stalls and 1.5's, inversions, flowers, antispin, and polyrhythm building up to an understanding of hybrid poi spinning.

Intermediate Double Staff Hybrids:

Bring both a set of poi and double staffs and learn twice as much! The concepts for spin and antispin hybrids are pretty much the same for both! You will learn many hybrids with only two different elements. This class will focus on full and half antispin isolation/hybrids and will give a new perspective to the hybrids you all ready know.

Looking for Dive Bars in Carlsbad

20+ years ago I lived in Oceanside and Vista areas and worked in and frequented dive bars throughout the North County.

Last summer I did a quick driving tour and it looked like most of the places I remember have been either torn down or renovated.

Are there any Dives left in Carlsbad ? Real Dives . . . that are dark, smell bad, have sticky floors, juke boxes, and pool tables?

I need information right away please! I have East Coast folks visiting and expecting a Friday Night tour.

Vacation!

My wife and I are going to San Diego for 3-4 days soon. I'm wondering what we should do. I used to live in san Diego twenty years ago, but never did the tourist thing, I lived in the bushes in balboa park while massively strung out on dope- had to escape with my life.
I think I would like to see the good side, 12th Av side, of Balboa park and the museums, and the Zoo. I want to go to the beach. But I don't know where to spend the other couple days. I want to get a decent hotel where I don't have to pay out my ass- we're just working stiffs, not rich. Fire Rings to be REMOVED Jan 1st.

We've tried our best to get the word to the council and mayor that removing the fire pits is unacceptable. It clearly hasn't worked!
It now looks inevitable that the fire rings will be removed the from the San Diego Beaches, at least temporarily. We need to make sure that they are stored and not destroyed so that we can try to solve the fire ring issue with the newly-elected city council.
If the city had voted to eliminate them during the summer, we could have collected thousands of names just by walking the beach.
The voters showed their desire to maintain the beaches by passing SD's Prop C. $2.5 Million is budgeted to be spent on Mission Bay Improvements in 2009, but this does not seem to include maintaining an extremely popular existing improvement.

We have been covered on Channel 10 news and got a lot of chears at the Ocean Beach Christmas Parade.

Right now, find other groups that want to save the fire rings so we can work together. Also, contact the San Diego City Council and Mayor's office and complain. Make sure they don't destroy nearly $100,000 worth of the people's fire rings. (contacts are at the link above)

Black's Beach in San Diego

So I received this email last night from a Black's Beach regular.
As a point of reference, the actual night of the full moon was Friday.

Since we canceled the Full Moon Circle, people seem to be going anyway and while
many Rainbows go on the night of the full moon to try to teach people how to
be conscious with the land and each other, the nights surround the full moon
seem to be an issue as well.

I went to Black's Saturday evening shortly before sunset and did some minor
trash pickup (cigarette butts and small scraps of plastic in the sand) as
well as removed some left over clothes, shoes, towels, etc. I didn't leave
until dark and there was no one there when I left - but I'm guessing later ....

At any rate, I am very sadden by all this. I've left the brother's name off
the email because who he is isn't important - what is important is the information
and pain he is sharing.

I'm always thankful for your efforts. We all mean well, but you have fallen short this last gathering. As I arrived the morning of March 22, there were still many people hiking up the trail. I saw one man rightly challenged for failing to keep his promise of carrying up cans. I'm sure he never kept that promise.

As I hiked down, I was saddened to find that steps had been taken from the trail. Just as we were getting ahead on trail upgrades, we suffered a setback. Soon afterward I discovered that volleyball poles had also been cut off. Soon after that I found the poles had not gone up in smoke. It was a senseless crime against us.

Eventually I learned that the vandalism of the trail had not taken place Friday night, but rather Thursday. Then Sunday I learned that a further act of vandalism had taken place Saturday night. More of the trail had been raided for firewood.

These acts of vandalism are taking place before, during and after your gathering. Abusive and irresponsible people are arriving before you, and staying after you have gone. I don't know what you can do about this. I just want you to be aware of the depth of the problem.

I feel a personal pain because I have done much of the trail upgrades. This vandal not only undoes my work. He leaves it in a dangerous state, specifically spikes sticking up. I hesitate to continue with our upgrades, because we may just be supplying him with more firewood.

Creating a San Diego Night Shift Workers Tribe (maybe)

Why maybe?: I am unfamiliar with San Diego. Maybe there is a sufficient social life for night shift workers, maybe not. If not, please read my message.

my use of "night shift:" approximately 10PM-7AM.

Greetings from Austin, TX. I'll keep this brief: I want one of you, or a few of you, to create a tribe for San Diego night shift workers and work to promote it. It is a great community service project. I worked the night shift for 6 months in Seattle, and I have talked to a few other people here in Austin who have worked the shift and I promise you that most know of the shift as being quite miserable. Books, movies, and video games, and the like, are not sufficient for people working the shift. People are social but the night shift generally does not allow people to be social enough. Fixing this problem would help society: the shift is necessary for businesses to function well, but the workers of the shift are neglected. Promoting: I advertised in the Austin Chronicle for 2 weeks. It was an unsuccessful ad, but I think the problem is that Austin does not have enough businesses open during the 2AM-6AM hours.
Solution for Austin: I think that what people in Austin need for developing a social life for night shift workers is successful models. San Diego is a larger city that probably has many businesses open for night shift workers. A tribe that caters to the night shift will help workers of the shift and businesses. Proper businesses can promote events such as the broadcasting of a rugby match @ 4AM @ such-and-such deli.

Fresh and Easy - Mostly Organic Grocery Store

So for those of you who live in North County ( Inland ) - there is a new store that just launched in Escondido on East Valley Parkway called FRESH & EASY.

It's way less expensive than most organic products ! I got 2 full bags of food for $35 !

- it's a blend of a Henry's and a Trader Joes (with some of the name brand junk too )... However, most of their stuff
is organic and in portions for a single or 2-3 person household - the prices are really good too ! They have their own brands of juices, hummus, smoothies, dressings etc... It's pretty cool. The store is a chain from England's " Tesco" Supermarkets - so far they have about 50 stores and plan to launch 200 in the next 12 months.

Tell me about your city, 4 days to visit

Hi everyone,
I am visiting some family in San Diego and they never give us a very good tour. So this trip I am doing some of my own investigation. I was hoping anyone could give me some good advice on going out, seeing some cool places and doing it with out spending much, not much at all.
This is what I have come up with so far. Whale watching off La Jolla shores. Do you think we can just go down there to one of the cliff sides and hang out look off the edge and walk around, without doing the boat tours. I haven’t been to that part of S.D. since 1994. Next going to the zoo its been more than 10yrs for me. Then the Birch Aquarium, or isn’t there and underground aquarium. Which one is your favorite for other worldly atmosphere and exotic and native animals? Now this may sound super touristy but I was thinking about going to Tijuana. My family has NEVER taken me. I really just want to go because I have never been. The busses from downtown, are they ez, seems the cheapest too? And then what to do once we get there.
Juice and I are outdoor types, kinda hippy, not into main stream partying or tanning, going to the mall is out. We like culture, food, drinks, theme bars and dancing (latino?). Going to places maybe only the locals know and don’t need to spend a lot to have fun.
Any help is awesome. Thanks and forgive my lengthy post here. :)

Mardi Love will be coming to San Diego for a show and two workshops!

Day one delivers combinations for quicker tempos. Using combinations in improvisational dance is a good way to keep your head whilst striving for variety and contrast. Spiritually and emotionally I believe that the universe will only bring to us the adversity that we can benefit from profit from and learn from.
